Kitchen Layout

The shape of the kitchen is an important feature in the planning of your kitchen as it decides the various possible arrangement s of the equipments. Whatever the shape of the kitchen, food preparation, sink and cooking must not be too far apart. A rule of thumb is that there must be a piece of worktop between sink and hob, where the food can be prepared. There are four main shapes a kitchen can have. These are galley kitchens, two-way galley kitchens, L-shaped kitchens and U-shaped kitchens, each with it's own pros and cons.

Galley kitchens

Galley kitchens have all important areas next to each other. Storage space is to be managed in such a layout by providing either big cupboards or a big refrigerator. The walking distance between the main work areas is to be minimized with sufficient space for worktop between the sink and the hob.

Two-way galley kitchens

Two-way galley kitchen is more compact. There is sufficient storage space in such layout. The only thing to keep in mind is the distance between the two galley; which should be sufficient enough to avoid bumping into cupboards.

L-shaped kitchens

The L-shaped kitchen will give a lot of workspace and storage space below the worktop. The walking distance between the main zones in your kitchen is minimized and also one of the corners of your kitchen can be used as a dining area. The problem area in an L-shaped kitchen is often the space under the worktop in the corner.

U-shaped kitchens

A U-shaped kitchen will give you a lot of work- and storage space. If the cupboards run all around the walls, the kitchen can become a bit enclosed. The cupboards' placements and size should be taken care of the same. One of the bars in such layout can be used for dining.
